A Hobbyist’s Advice by Roland Andre L. Malic

I recently had a chat with Carose V. Bautista about a thing that she loves to do in her spare time, baking. This baking aficionado is a Research Analyst, KPI Collection from the Fundamentals department. Indeed, she was generous enough to grant us a little time to share her experience about her hobby.

I immediately learned from her that what made her pursue baking wasn’t baking itself. Instead, she started from being engrossed with making pastas at first. Nevertheless, a girl with a sweet-tooth, she eventually gave baking a chance. Upon hearing a request from one of her teammates to make a hot pink cupcake tower, she then went on a search to find a formal training or workshop to gain enough skills to a higher level from an amateur baker. Through the help of online postings she got the training she wanted. She then proceeded to practice at home and started to bring samples of her creations to the office. Eventually, her friends and teammates in her department became not just her food critics but most especially her food devourers. The reaction towards the cupcakes, I think, is positive since she told me that her teammates not just only provided comments and suggestions but also asked for more. Because of that, she bakes cupcakes on a weekly basis whenever she has free time and also by her teammates’ requests.

For now, her main specialties are her cupcakes with varieties like chocolate, red velvet, lemon, cheesecake and banana to mention just some. To add, she also expressed to me that she has an intention to expand her knowledge in baking and be more experimental. She would also invest in more ingredients for a wider range of varieties.

Enjoyable and fruitful it may seem, she sometimes, however, had to go through hard times to get the desired good quality of the finished product. As she relates it to her work, one must have to keep checks every now and then on whether he or she is doing the right thing or not because the ending output might not be good and may end up receiving poor ratings. Also, one must remain patient in achieving the right strategy to be of good or greater quality. She also says that just like in baking and at the same time her work as a research analyst, one must really practice being organized so that there will be a clearer procedure and will help in performing well.

To end our conversation, she advised FactSet employees who want to try a hobby outside of the workplace to pursue it. This does not only help you to pass the time and relax the mind but also be of great share to others which, in her case, is her teammates. Also, through pursuing a hobby, one can attain qualities which can also be applied to your field of work. Finally, she advised that one must only pursue a hobby that he thinks would suit him since from there, he can develop as a person.
